In 2010, Stanford University established the Water in the West program to address the West’s growing water crisis and to create new solutions that move the region toward a more sustainable water future. A joint program of the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment and the Bill Lane Center for the American West, Water in the West marshals the resources of one of the world’s preeminent research institutions to address growing water scarcity in the region. Bill Landreth, ’69, understood the need for research and scholarship focused on issues surrounding water scarcity in the American West and recognized the valuable work being done through the Water in the West program. In 2014, he established the William C. Landreth Visiting Scholar Fund and provided a $1 million endowed gift to support visiting faculty and scholars associated with Water in the West. Since then, the program has hosted a number of experts at Stanford.
