Water in the West has done extensive work in four main focal areas: Sustainable Groundwater, Urban Water, Water and Energy, and Watershed Health and Allocation. These focal areas seek to integrate disciplines, redefine old concepts and reimagine policies and institutions that have traditionally hindered sustainable management. While these focal areas are distinctive, they complement one another in many ways.
Focal Areas
Sustainable Groundwater
Through interdisciplinary research and engagement with water sector stakeholders, our affiliated scholars have identified and developed solutions for more effective groundwater management and policy.
Urban Water
The urban water sector faces a suite of unique challenges that will only become more complicated with population growth, climate change and environmental and water quality concerns.
Water & Energy
Explore our past work on tools and best management practices to promote energy efficiency through water conservation, while reducing energy consumption in the treatment and use of water.
Watershed Health & Allocation
Stanford researchers collaborate through Water in the West to find a balance between the water needs of cities and agricultural interests and those of wildlife and the outdoor recreation sector.
