Building on a workshop held in October, 2011 at Stanford University, which examined issues of integrated groundwater management generally, this event will focus on two key themes in more detail: the use of science in formulating and implementing effective groundwater policy, and the use of groundwater markets and trading systems. In particular, this workshop will:
- Examine what we know, and what we still need to learn about managing the interfaces between hydrological and ecological science, groundwater policy and management and stakeholder engagement;
- Examine what we know about groundwater markets and trading, including buy-backs and water banking and what we still need to learn;
- Present case studies and examples of best practices and key challenges in these areas; and
- Help shape the research for the Comparative Groundwater Law and Policy Program to ensure that it is responsive to decision makers' needs.
